Isle of Faces

Fire & Blood

The Isle of Faces is presented as a sacred island in the Gods Eye, and as the setting of a story about Ser Addam Velaryon’s preparations to retake Tumbleton. Its place in the account is uncertain: the landing and consultation belong to what singers say, while the historical narrative withholds confirmation of them.

The singers’ account

Singers say that Addam flew from King’s Landing to the Gods Eye, landed on the Isle of Faces, and took counsel with the Green Men. The story places the island at a turning point in his campaign, between his flight from King’s Landing and the gathering of an army to challenge the Two Betrayers.

What the account establishes

The narrative cautions that a scholar must confine himself to known fact. It establishes that Addam flew far and fast, visiting castles whose lords remained loyal to the queen and assembling forces for an assault on Tumbleton; by the time he was ready to descend on the town, he had nearly four thousand men. It does not confirm that he landed on the Isle of Faces or met with the Green Men. The island therefore enters the account through a singer’s tradition, set against the more firmly stated movements and military preparations of Addam’s campaign.
